Professional counseling for sexual concerns in a safe, confidential online space
I trained in clinical psychology, and when I began my residency in a psychiatry department in 1999, I regularly met people struggling with sexual problems. In the early 2000s, while working at Severance Hospital, I met child victims of sexual abuse, and through their suffering I came to understand far more deeply how serious sexual problems can be. Around that time, an unexpected opportunity led me to join a project in which I began providing cognitive behavioral therapy to adolescents who had committed sexual offenses, through the probation office. As public concern grew, I increasingly worked with adult sexual offenders in prisons and in the forensic psychiatric treatment facility, and came to treat and study people with a wide range of compulsive sexual behaviors, paraphilias and problematic sexual behaviors. Now, some twenty years later, with that experience behind me and now training other professionals, I find that more and more people ask me: “Where can people with sexual addiction problems actually get treatment?” A few organizations exist, but not nearly enough, and many people in particular cannot access effective treatment because of where they live. After much thought, I decided to run an organization that addresses compulsive sexual behavior online myself. With support from Konyang University’s start-up support program, I founded the Korea Evidence-Based Psychological Services Center, and then opened the “SPACE S Online Counseling Center” as an affiliated institute. We are starting small, but through effective, evidence-based treatment we hope to help the many people in Korea who are struggling with sexual difficulties.
